From Scaps to Sweets: IFSU Celebrates Christmas with Sustainable Falir

Ifugao State University (IFSU) is upcycling landfill-bound materials by transforming these into Christmas decorations with "Dessert Land" theme.

Scrap papers and used tarpaulins, once destined for landfills, have been reimagined into delightful decorations, showcasing IFSU's commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. This approach not only saves resources but also minimizes pollution and reduces the need for new materials.

The spirit of the season ignited with a luminous lantern parade. Students, staff, and even senior leaders proudly held aloft their handmade lanterns, culminating in the oval with a joyous singalong of Christmas songs led by the Payadon Band, a student group of singers and instrumentalists. This festive procession culminated in the lighting of a Christmas tree, crafted from repurposed scraps. As twilight painted December 1st, the University community gathered to witness this symbol of hope reborn from discarded materials.

University President Dr. Eva Marie Codamon-Dugyon, in her warm message, reminded everyone of the true meaning of Christmas: Jesus Christ's sacrifice for the world. Her heartfelt wishes for joy and good tidings to the whole IFSU community resonated before everyone was guided to the official opening of IFSU's Christmas Village.

From gingerbread houses to candy cane sculptures, every piece speaks to the community's creativity and dedication to sustainability. The village itself, embodying another core value of IFSU – creativity – stands as a testament to upcycling.

Born in 2018 with Dr. Dugyon's appointment, this tradition embodies IFSU's core value of Faith: a powerful belief and faith that there is God Almighty who guides the University in all its undertakings and endeavors. Its annual celebration of CHRISTmas is IFSU’s vibrant tapestry woven in faith.
