Heritage and culture conservation runs deeply at Ifugao State University (IFSU) as evident in the framing of its vision and core values.

The frameworks are translated in initiatives conducted by the University such as the interactive textile exhibit and collection display by the IFSU- Ifugao Rice Cultural Museum at the lobby of the Administration Building, IFSU- Lamut Campus on May 18, 2022 in conscious oneness in the celebration of the International Museum Day and National Heritage Month.

IFSU invited Ruben M. Gumangan, culture-bearer, and one of the few male weavers, to demonstrate weaving and proper wearing of Ifugao attires to employees. Gumangan hails from Amduntog, Asipulo, Ifugao and belongs to the Yattuka/Hanglulaw subtribe.

He expounded on the meaning of colors used on the woven fabric called, “inabol” and how the design could be a guiding force to the person wearing it.

“The color black symbolizes the night, white is the day, red is the sun and yellow is stars. They are the witnesses of the universe. If you do wrong, the universe will bear witness to your actions,” Gumangan pointed out.

This year’s celebration of International Museum Day focused on raising awareness that museums are important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures, and development of mutual understanding, cooperation, and peace among peoples.

On the other hand, National Heritage Month highlights the importance of preserving and promoting local heritage within a community and its impact on shaping the Philippine cultural identity.

Moreover, Dr. Liza Matic Tamargo, Director of Library Services and Museum, said that this university-initiated activity hopes to provide us with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the beauty and uniqueness of our local heritage.

IFSU will also hold a grand Exhibit and Cultural Showcase as part of the National Heritage Month Celebration at Hapao Campus next week, May 26.
